Standards: Metaphor, identification, and ethos and pathos are very important in Arbus' photographs. Also key are terministic screen, and the three dimensions of identity: the given, the readymade, and the constructed. Finally, two of Barthe's three messages, the literal and the symbolic, can be used to describe Arbus' work. The idea of the "gist" is also important. Representational Trend: All three of these photographs feature "freaks" or misfits of some kind. Claim: I believe that, in showcasing misfits who show no shame in their differentiating qualities, Arbus makes the audience unable to pity them and also makes the audience feel shame about themselves.
